Charles Joseph Martin Served served with the 1/4 "Queens" Royal West Surrey Regiment in WWI and was awarded both the Territorial Force War Medal and the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal in 1919.

The 1/4th Battalion of the RWS regiment was mobilised in Croydon, in August 1914 as part of the Surrey Brigade, Home Counties Division. On 29 October 1914 they were posted to India, remaining there throughout the war. The Division was broken up on arrival in Bombay. In December 1914 – January 1915 with Secunderabad Brigade, 9th (Secunderabad) Division and from January to April 1915 in Lucknow Brigade, 8th (Lucknow) Division. Transferred in April to Allahabad Brigade in same Division. January 1916 to Peshawar Brigade then Nowshera Brigade in 1st (Peshawar) Division. Left March 1917.
