John Storey was born in Plymouth Devon in 1817. A Porter he enlisted with the 4th Light Dragoons in 1836 at the age of 19 and saw extensive service in the East Indies and the Crimea. Having fought his way through the Crimean War he took his discharge from the army after 24 years service in 1860. He was 43 years old at the time and had had his left finger amputated at some point. His forwarding address was 9 Bayne's Court, Great Warner Street, Clerkenwell, London but he didn't stay there long if at all.
The 1861 census has him as a Publican - owner of the Lennox Arms in Brighton, Sussex. It was here that he passed away a year later at the age of 46.
