Ernest Walter Rose was born in Garboldisham, Norfolk in 1895. He attested for service with 5th Fire Command, R.G.A. at Thetford in 1913 and saw service in France from 8 August 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the LG of 21/06/1916. The citation for which read:
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when maintaining lines On one occasion a telephone pole was cut from his hand by a shell but he coolly got another and erected it under heavy fire. On another occasion he was blown into a trench by a shell, but got out, completed his work and later brought in a wounded man."
Rose was later wounded, in July 1917 - Gunshot Wound to the thigh. He was discharged in November 1918. According to the 1939 Register he was a Motor Mechanic and Air Raid Warden living at the Manor Cottages in Garboldisham. He died in 1944.
