Ralph Alan Oscroft Smith was born in Exeter in 1897. He joined up for service in WWI and was commissioned a Lieutenant with the 14th Bn Gloucestershire Regiment on 25.7.1915. He was sent to France on 1.2.1916 and was twice MID - on 23.5.18 and 27.12.1918. His Military Cross was awarded in the Birthday Honours List of 3.6.1918.
Not satisfied that he had done enough, he continued to serve with his beloved Devon Regiment in WWII.
He died in Exeter in 1954
