Frederick Alfred Freeman was born in Bow London in 1887. He enlisted with the Royal Marines in 1906 and was transferred to the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1907. He was at Chatham Barracks when WWI broke out but was soon in action, sent to Ostende in Belgium between August and September 1914. Thereafter he served at Dunkirk from 5th to 12th October 1914 before returning to Chatham after a short spell on HMS Nelson.
He was awarded the MSM on 16.9.1919 and the LSGCM 1.8.1921 and was discharged in 1927. He was mobilised again in 1938.
According to the 1939 Register he was a Licensed Victualler and a Retired Warrant Officer Royal Marines living at 9 Granville Road, Hove
