Ewald Eselin de Vries was born in Malmesbury in the Western Cape in 1899. He was a Fireman employed by the SA Railways and living in Salt River, Cape Town when attested for service in WWII with the South African Railways & Harbours Brigade on 26 June 1940. He served with No. 2 Docks Operating Company in North Africa and was evacuated back to South Africa on 8 May 1942 suffering with sciatica. He was formally discharged from the Union Defence Force on 27 August 1942, having resumed his pre-war occupation.

He was also a Corps Officer, Town Corps, Cape Western Sub-District, St. John Ambulance Brigade. he was created a Serving Brother of the Order of St John of Jerusalem on 20 July 1955, and was awarded the Service Medal of the Order of St John, together with an Additional Award Clasp, in 1959.

De Vries died on 12 March 1985 in Bloemfontein at the age of 85.
