Ernest George Leathers was born in Kroonstad, Orange Free State in 1889 and would have been a boy of 11 when his country went to war with Great Britain in the Anglo Boer War. He served with the Rand Rifles in German South West Africa in 1915 until that campaign was over on 9 July whereafter he served in German East Africa as a Driver with the South African Service Corps.

A Miner by occupation, he died at Boksburg on the Witwatersrand in 1961 from a Miner's disease - Phthisis - he was the (retired) Chief Sampler of the Witwatersrand Gold Mine at the time of his death.
