Herbert Brian Jones was born in Bradford on Avon, Wilts in 1889. He was commissioned into the 3rd Wiltshire Regiment in WWI and was posted to France on 1.10.1915. He was awarded the Military Cross and bar on 1 January 1918. The citation to which appeared in the London Gazette of 24 September 1918 and read as follows:

"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. He was throughout of valuable assistance to his commanding officer; in particular he carried a message under heavy machine gun fire to the nearest battalion headquarters, thus obtaining machine gun support from that battalion, which effectively covered the withdrawal which his own battalion was ordered to carry out."

In 1921 he was a Bank Clerk with Lloyd's Bank living in Neath, Glamorganshire. 

According to the 1939 Register he was a Bank Manager living at Lloyd's Bank House, Boston, Lincolnshire.

He passed away on 24 December 1984 in Kent.
