Alfred Thomas Henly was born in Worthing, Sussex in 1879. Having joined the Royal Garrison Artillery he served 18 years in the ranks and 2 years 86 days as a Warrant Officer II class. He was posted to France with the 145 Hvy Bty RGA on 20 September 1914, later transferring to the 1st Indian Lahore Ammunition Park. He was Mentioned in Dispatches in the LG of 22.6.1915 and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal on 18.7.1917, the citation for which award read thus:
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in extinguishing burning ammunition when a dump had been exploded, and also in unloading ammunition under very heavy shell fire."
Henly was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1918 and a Lieutenant on 12 December 1919. He retired on 17 October 1920. His Long Service & Good Conduct Medal was awarded in 1917.
According to the 1939 Register he was a member of the Corps of Commissionaires living at 24 Culver Grove, Harrow and was a (Retired) Lieutenant, Royal Artillery. He died on 19 February 1959.
