John Edward Welch was born in Leigh in 1909. He enlisted with the Border Regiment in 1930 and saw the first six years of his service with them in India. He returned to England in 1936 and wed Catherine May Roberts in Carlisle on 19 March 1937. 

With the outbreak of WWII he was posted to France on 15 September 1939 and, after the fall of that country, he was back in the UK by 31 May 1940. He saw a further 9 years service at Home before being discharged on 27 June 1949 He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1948. At some point he transferred to the Kings Regiment which is where he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. 

His WWII medals were issued on 28 July 1948. He died in Eastbourne, East Sussex in 1995.

Medal is in good condition unless indicated otherwise. Sold with some research. The unusual award of the Atlantic Star to an Army Regular is confirmed in the extract from his service file which accompanies the medals.
