John Peacock was born in Ashburton, Devon in 1881. He enlisted with the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 25.11.1898 and saw service in WWI being present in action off the Falkland Isles on 8 December 1914. He was invalided out of the service on 25.10.1916 and died on 31.5.1917 from "General Paralysis and is often insane" He was awarded a Silver War Badge No. 5860 which is not with the medals.
On December 8, 1914, the Battle of the Falkland Islands occurred, a decisive naval engagement where a British force led by Vice-Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee annihilated the German Imperial German Navy's East Asiatic Squadron, commanded by Vice-Admiral Maximilian von Spee. This victory, which saw the sinking of the German flagship SMS Scharnhorst and several other ships, avenged the earlier British defeat at the Battle of Coronel and remains a significant anniversary in the Falkland Islands, observed with a public holiday.
