William Balls was born in Cove, County Cork in 1826. He attested for service with the 50th Regiment (Queens Own Royal West Kent) on 29.5.1846 and saw service with the regiment in the East Indies, Malta, Turkey, the Crimea, Ceylon and New Zealand.
He was twice convicted and imprisoned by Regimental Court Martial. On the last occasion, in 18556, he was reduced to Private but was promoted again to Corporal on 10.2.1860 and to Sergeant on 11.3.1861. He was discharged on 11.7.1867
Balls was active in the Crimean battles of Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol. He also fought in the Maori Wars in New Zealand.
His intended place of residence was Rye in Sussex.
