Joseph Black was born in Alnwick, Northumberland in 1871. He attested with the 5th (Militia Battalion) of the Northumberland Fusiliers in April 1891 and saw service with them on the island of Malta during the Anglo Boer War - it was then that he earned the Queens Mediterranean Medal 20 October 1900 until 8 July 1901 when he was disembodied.
He enlisted with the 20th Battalion, Rifle Brigade with no's 51 and 202164 seeing service in France from 17.1.1916 - 21.11.1918. He was discharged on 27.2.1919.
The 1939 Register has him living at Battlemont Rd., Alnwick, Northumberland where he is described as a Retired Boot Repairer. He died in Alnwick on 19 May 1950.
