Awarded to all who took part in the quelling of the Sepoy mutiny which was the immediate cause of the uprising. It did however cause focus to be placed on the running of the HEIC and how they conducted affairs in India, so much so that control ws tranferred directly to the crown for the administration of India.
The medal ribbon is said to depict the red of blood and the white of bandages.
