Nursing Sister Mary Wharton joined the TFNS in 1908, her home unit being the 2nd Northern. She was sent to France on 9 October 1914 as a Territorial Force Nurse whose abilities, devotion and dedication were soon recognised when she was Mentioned in Dispatches on page 70 of the LG on 1 January 1916 for her work with the Territorial Force in France in WWI.

This was followed by the award of the Royal Red Cross Decoration (2nd Class) for her distinguished service in the same theatre - the notification of which appeared in the London Gazette of 14 January 1916. According to the Evening Mail of 28 June 1916 she was invested by King George V at Buckingham Palace in June 1916. Her file (included) contains a memorandum on what to wear when at the ceremony.

She finished the war as an Acting Matron being demobilised on 30 March 1919 - she was living at Glebe Field, Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey from where she corresponded with the authorities in respect of the medal ribbons she was entitled to wear.
