George William Chambers was born in Sheffield in 1882. He attested for service in WWI with the 8th Bn York & Lancaster Regiment on 3 September 1914 and was posted to France on 27 August 1915. He was a FIRST DAY OF THE SOMME CASUALTY, incurring a Gunshot Wound to the Chest (penetrating) from which he never recovered dying of his Wounds two days later on 3 July 1916.

The 8th Battalion had landed in France in August 1915 and in October formed part of the 8th Division. On 1 July 1916nthe 8th Division attacked towards Ovillers and Pozieres, two villages to the north-east of Albert. Chambers was shot in the chest in the attack, succumbing to his wounds two days later.

His wife was receiving a Separation Allowance but the payment of this ceased a month before he died after Chambers wrote to the authorities in early 1916 advising them that his wife was "cohabiting with a man named Frank Easy at 11 New Holland, Rotherham,"
