Lamb was a Plantagenet Royal directly related to King Edward III and was first commissioned into the Royal Navy becoming a Lieutenant in 1907 but his services were no longer required as war broke out in 1914 and he was dismissed with the rank of Lt Commander on account of his excessive drinking.

He joined the Honourable Artillery Company as a Gunner later that year but was promoted 2 weeks later to Bombardier and commissioned on 15 August 1916 to Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery attached to the RGA.

Having been posted to Mesopotamia he died of heatstroke in Basra on 24 July 1918 when officer in charge of No. 2 Section Army Ammunition Park where he was responsible for sending ammunition to the front line.

He is interred in the Baghdad North Gate Cemetery.
