James Harold Dinwoodie was born in Walton, Liverpool on 13 April 1886. He joined the Merchant Navy and was qualified as a 1st Mate by the Board of Trade on 10 August 1912. At some point he moved to the USA where, according to their 1915 census, he was living in The Bronx, New York.
He was the 4th Mate aboard the ill-fated steamship S.S. Shimosa bound for Canada when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine 220 miles NW; 1/2 mile west of Eagle Island off the coast of County Mayo, Ireland on 30 July 1917.
The Captain and 16 of the crew were lost, including Dinwoodie. He was married to Katie Henrietta nee Bott at the time of his death and was living at 15 Victoria Mount, Birkenhead in Cheshire.
He is remembered with honour on the Tower Hill Memorial.
