John Edward Stokes was born in Kensington, London in 1892. He enlisted with the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry and went with them to France on 19 December 1914. He Died of Wounds received in action on 9 May 1917.

On the day he died, the 1st Battalion The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry was stationed in the Arras sector of the Western Front, likely involved in fighting related to the larger Battle of Arras, as the battalion moved from Festubert in March 1917 in preparation for it. The battalion was part of the 95th Infantry Brigade within the 5th Division.

He left behind a wife and daughter, both named Ethel, whose address was 61 Coningham Road, Shepherd's Bush, W12. He had married while on leave in June 1915 and his daughter had been born on 7 December 1916 - six months before he died.

He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
