John Edwin Thornton was born in Durham on 18 March 1893. He enlisted with the Royal Navy as a Boy in 1909 and was elevated to Ordinary Seaman when he reached the age of 18 - 18.3.1911. He served at the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS New Zealand and was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct medal in 1926. He was recalled in WWII but had only home service at Drake - the Shore Establishment - where he was a Chief Petty Officer.

He was a keen rugby player and vice captain of the Devonport Services' fifteen.

According to the 1939 Register he was a Foreman/Cellarman at a Brewery (Heavy Worker) and was living at 3 Westbourne Road, Sunderland. 

He died in Sunderland, at the above address, at the age of 56 in 1949.
