Captain Percy Paovich Cotton was born in Holloway, London in 1872. He served as Lieutenant in the RNVR and was with the Royal Naval Division from 7 October 1914 as a Sub Lieutenant. He served in Malta in 1915 and was admitted to hospital there on 10 October 1915 with Enteritis/Dysentery. He suffered with Enteric Fever for many months and was eventually granted the rank of Acting Commander as 2nd in Command of Drake Battalion, RND from 13 December 1916 until 2 January 1917. He then transferred to the Inland Water Transport section of the Royal Engineers with whom her served until well after the end of the war. The 1921 census has him still with the RE. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre in 1919.
V.A.D. Edith Emma Chapman was born in Colchester in 1892. She married Percy Paovich Cotton in 1930 having been previously married to a Saunders. She served WWI as a Voluntary Aid worker in France from 25 August 1918 until 22 May 1919. The BWM/VM are her full entitlement.
Pte Harold Frank Chapman was born in Colchester in 1889 and was the brother of Edith Emma Chapman (Cotton) - he served with the 26th Royal Fusiliers entering France on 4 May 1916. He was discharged on 11 November 1918. He died in Colchester in 1970. The BWM/VM are his full entitlement.
The 1939 Register has Percy and Emma living at the Bungalow, West Mersea, Essex where he is described as an Architect A.R.I.B.A. and an Observer with the Observer Corps. Emma is described as Unpaid Domestic Worker (Housewife) and an A.R.P. Nurse.
