David Melville was born in Walsall, Staffordshire in 1894. He served in the Merchant Navy as an Asst Cook/Steward in WWI and appears to have carried on in that occupation after the war. He went missing from his home in Blyth, Northumberland in 1936 and was the subject of a police search. He was described as unemployed at the time. He was later disabled but able enough to serve in the local ARP Control Centre in WWII
According to the 1939 Register he was living at 80 Park Road in Blyth where he was described as a Ship's Steward/Disabled and an ARP member at the Control Centre.
