Frank Griffith was born in Anerley, Surrey on 9 February 1890. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and studied medicine at Aberdeen University, graduating MB ChB 1913. He started off his medical career as a House Surgeon at the Leeds General Infirmary but donned a uniform for WWI, being commissioned into the RAMC on 8 September 1914. He served at Devonport later that year but was soon posted to India in 1915 and to Mesopotamia in March 1917.

He transferred to the Indian Medical Service in 1920 and was attached to the Military Hospital in Masul from 30 October 1920 until 3 August 1921 - earning the General Service Medal with Iraq clasp for his efforts. He was then engaged on the North West Frontier attached to 49 Indian General Hospital where he earned the India General Service medal with clasp Waziristan. He later earned the North West Frontier 1930-31 clasp to this medal.

On 8 March 1926 he was promoted to Major, followed by promotion to Lt Colonel, IMS, on 8 March 1934. It was in this rank that he was awarded the 1935 Jubilee Medal.
