Cyril Austin Snow was born in Exeter in 1896. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy on 26.10.1912 and served in WWI aboard vessels Foresight, Blake and Defiance He continued his service and was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal aboard Vivid in 1929. An Able Seaman when WWII broke out he was an early casualty going down when HMS Rawalpindi was sunk on 23 November 1939.
HMS Rawalpindi was sunk in the North Sea by the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. The former luxury liner, converted to an armed merchant cruiser, was on patrol between Iceland and the Faroes when she was intercepted. Despite being hopelessly outgunned, she fought bravely under Captain Edward Coverley Kennedy, who refused to surrender, but was eventually set on fire and sank, with 275 crew members lost.
