Leonard Bray was born in Swaffham, Norfolk on 9 January 1898. He enlisted with the Royal Navy for service as a Boy on 3 February 1915 and was designated an Ordinary Seaman on his 18th birthday in 1916. He served at the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS Champion and, post-war, made a career in the RN. He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1931 and the Greek Cross of Valour in 1932 whilst aboard HMS Resource - a Fleet Repair Ship which was present and assisted in the rescue mission after the devastating earthquake that struck the Greek island of Ierissos at 19h20 on 26 September 1932. The men were also awarded the Hellenic Red Cross Medal which is not included.
Bray was awarded the 1935 Jubilee Medal - confirmed on his service papers.
He was, according to the 1939 Register, a Chart Attendant at HM Dockyard (and a Naval Pensioner) in Portsmouth and living at 54 Torrington Road, Portsmouth. He died in Portsmouth in March 1977.
