Ernest Stanley Butcher was born on Gibraltar in 1895 where his father was serving with the Royal Engineers. He enlisted with the RE in 1910 and served in France, Iraq and Turkey with them being Mentioned in Dispatches for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field (LG 7.2.1919)
After WWI he transferred to the Royal Signals becoming Regimental Sergeant Major at Canterbury in 1937 where he was commissioned as Lieutenant & Quartermaster. He saw service in France and was evacuated (Dunkirk) where he had been detailed for special duties. He was then seconded to the War Office staff.
He earned the 1937 Coronation medal as 2306282 W.O 1st Class, Royal Signals
His son, Stanley Edward, served in WWII
He died, aged 50, on 2 September 1945
