Aubrey Vincent Harris was born in Port Elizabeth on 10.1.1898 and attested for service with 1 South Africa Infantry on 28.5.1917 when 19 years of age. He was sent to England as one of a fresh draft of men to augment the decimated numbers of the South African Division on the Western Front. He arrived in France on 11 November 1917 and, in March 1918, suffered severe frostbite in his left foot which required medical treatment in London. He did not return to the theatre of war and was discharged in South Africa in 1919.
He attested for service in WWII serving with various home units within South Africa. He was commissioned into the South African Coastal Defence Corps and was released from service with the rank of Captain on 7.1.1944. He applied for his medals in 1966.
