If there was anyone desperate to don a uniform it was John Christian Verwey. Born in Cape Town in 1895 he first saw service in WWI in German South West Africa with the Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance. After that theatre closed he volunteered for service in France with the 1st SAI Brigade. Having reached England he was sent to France early in 1918 and it here, at the epic Battle of Marrieres Wood, where so many South Africans were either wounded, taken prisoner or lost their lives that he was Severely Gassed - necessitating his return to England where, after treatment in hospital, he was repatriated to South Africa.
On the outbreak of WWII he enlisted with the Cape Town Highlanders but was discharged from them as physically unfit. He then attested with the South African Medical Corps with the same end result. Eventually he was allowed to continue with the South Africa Corps of Military Police with whom her served in South Africa only until his discharge on medical grounds in 1944.
He died in Cape Town in 1982.
