Henry Edwin Summers was born in Gillingham Kent in 1881, He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy in 1896 and was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in 1899 Much of his early service was aboard HMS Ramillies and he was aboard her in and around Malta during the fighting in South Africa and China, taking no part in those conflicts. He was awarded the LSGCM in 1914 and saw much service in WWI where he was aboard the Emperor of India until his retirement from the Navy in 1920. He then became a Special Constable.

According to the 1939 Register he was a Grocer's Clerk and retired Boatswain living at Elmhurst in Midhurst. 

He rejoined for WWII in January 1941 seeing service at HMS Glendower, the seamanship training establishment at Pwllheli. He was promoted to Commissioned Bosun  and reverted to the Retired List on 27 August 1945. He died in Chichester on 14 September 1960.
