John Slack was born in Bulwell, Notts on 13 April 1877. He enlisted with the Royal Marine Light Infantry in 1898 and saw service aboard HMS Lancaster who was on hand to assist during the devastating earthquake that struck Messina in 1908. He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1916 whilst serving aboard HMS Royal Arthur. He was also on Magnificent during the war.
Slack was discharged after 21 years service on 29 November 1918 - his last few days being spent as a Cook at the Melville Barracks in Chatham. He died of disease on 17 January 1919 and is buried in Bulwill, Notts.
His wife, Ethel, later moved to Alberta in Canada.
