Walter Carvell served with 5 Signal Coy Royal Engineers in France from 17 August 1914 and was twice Mentioned in Dispatches - on the first first occasion in the LG of 20 October 1914 and on the second occasion, on 22 June 1915. He was recognised for his gallantry by the President of France during the operations between 21st and 30th August 1914 with the award of the French Medaille Militaire in the London Gazette of 5 November 1914. Carvell's division was heavily engaged in the Battle of Aisne between 12 and 15 September 1914.
He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal in 1921.
