Sidney Ralph Roach was born in Walthamstow, Essex in 1894. He attested for service with the Royal Navy in 1912 and served in WWI at the Battle of Jutland aboard HMS Inflexible. He was awarded the  LSGCM whilst aboard Repulse in 1928.

Having been pensioned in 1934, he was recalled with the outbreak of WWII serving in Hawkins, Enterprise, Cumberland and, notably, Birmingham from 26 November 1941 when she was at the Cape Station and afterwards when she was part of the covering force for Operations Harpoon and Vigorous from Gibraltar and Alexandria to supply the island of Malta. He would have been aboard when Birmingham was attacked by Stukas in March 1942 and when she was torpedoed by U407 off the coast of Cyrenaica on 28 November 1943. He rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

He died in Bromley, London in 1956.
