Frederick Charles White was born in Swerford, Oxfordshire on 17 January 1888. He enlisted with the Royal Engineers and saw service with their Signal Squadron and, in WWI, was sent to France with the 1st Field Squadron on 15 August 1914 - an early entrant to the war.
He was awarded the Merite Agricole in the London Gazette of 7 October 1919 as a Farrier Sergeant and Carriage Smith with the Signal Squadron, R.E., 4th Cavalry Division - reputedly only 156 of these awards were made to Commonwealth men in WWI and only 6 to Other Ranks of which he was one. Medical records have him being treated for Rheumatism on 24 March 1918, whilst attached to Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division at which point he was a Farrier Sergeant aged 30 with 11 years service.
He was awarded the Long Service Medal to no. 1853199. According to the 1921 census he was at the Main Barracks in Abassia, Cairo with the 2nd Field Company R.E. and, at age 33, was still unmarried.
