1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; War Medal 1939-45 - all unnamed as awarded with condolence award slip and in original box of issue addressed to Mr J. Grierson, 169 Dundyvan Road, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.
LT/JX226428 Seaman Robert Grierson was born in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire in 1917. He joined the Patrol Service of the Royal Navy in 1940 and was aboard HMS Haslemere when, famously, her Skipper, Fletcher, jumped overboard into freezing water to attempt the rescue of the pilot Amy Johnson whose plane had gone down. He perished in the valiant attempt.
Later in the war he was aboard HMS Loyal Friend succumbing to an explosion on that vessel on 28 October 1943. The Loyal Friend was a trawler requisitioned by the RN and used as an anti-submarine ship. Grierson's Atlantic Star has a scarce silver RNPS badge on it which was awarded, exclusively, to RNPS personnel after six months at sea on minesweeping and anti-submarine duties to reflect the hazardous nature of their work.
He is remembered with honour at the Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery
Sold with some copied research. The medals are in good condition unless otherwise stated.
