Eric Darley was born in Hull in 1900. He joined the Merchant Navy when he was 17 and, not long after, was lost at sea when his vessel, the SS Treverbyn was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-75 2 miles ESE of Ushinish lighthouse, Outer Hebrides whilst on a voyage from Narvik to Manchester with a cargo of Iron Ore.

On the night of 3 September 1917 the Treverbyn struck a mine and within minutes sank. The explosion was witnessed by the lighthouse keeper who sent a message to summon help. A fishing boat went to the scene and picked up seven survivors, but 27 crew members including the captain were killed.

He is remembered on the Tower Hill Naval Memorial, London.
