George William Stannard was born on 15 April 1893 in Kingston-upon-Thames. London. He enlisted with the Royal Marines on 15/11/15 at the age of 23 years 5 months and embarked with the Royal Marine Brigade on 26 July 1915.

He was part of a draft for the British Expeditionary Force on 21 November 1916, posted to the 1st Royal Marine Battalion from 8 December 1916 until 25 March 1917. He was treated for an Ulcer on his thigh and rejoined the 1st Royal Marine Battalion. From 4 May 1917 until 19 May he was admitted to 1st (RN) Field Ambulance. He was Killed in Action in France on 26 October 1917.

Stannard had been promoted to Acting Corporal on 15 November 1916 but reverted to Private on 26 March 1917 - he was the son of Mrs E. Church (formerly Stannard), of 15 Craven Rd., Kingston-on-Thames, & the late Frank Stannard. His next of kin was his sister Nellie.

He is remembered on Panel1 of the Tyne Cot Memorial.
